Since 1995, the Alliance for Downtown New York has been working to enhance the quality of life in Lower Manhattan. We aim to provide workers, residents and visitors with a clean, safe and dynamic neighborhood. Below are some of the services we provide.
Downtown Connection Bus

Public Safety
Dressed in their distinctive red uniforms, the Downtown Alliance security officers work closely with the New York City Police Department to keep the streets safe. Equipped with guidebooks and maps, they're always ready to offer directions and friendly advice to neighborhood visitors. learn more >>
Sanitation
The Downtown's Alliance's sanitation staff works tirelessly to keep Lower Manhattan clean, beautiful, and graffiti-free. Every day, we service trash receptacles in our district, manually and machine-sweep the streets and sidewalks and even use a high-pressure power washer equipped with environmentally safe cleaning materials. learn more >>
Social Services
Though Lower Manhattan does not have a large homeless population, the Downtown Alliance helps the homeless here to get the aid they need. learn more >>

Streetscapes
Making the streets of Lower Manhattan more attractive and convenient for pedestrians is a top priority for the Downtown Alliance. Our ambitious $20 million streetscape plan has given lower Broadway a new look. The plan includes: reconstruction of all the sidewalks and curbs along lower Broadway; installation of new trash baskets; a user-friendly wayfinding and street sign system; and, handsome new light poles and street furniture. learn more >>
Street Lighting & Furniture
The Downtown Alliance has transformed the look of lower Broadway by installing tall and graceful street lamps, attractive bike bollards and sleek trash cans. learn more >>
Canyon of Heroes Markers
New York City has played host to the greatest celebrations on earth: its grand ticker-tape parades. The Downtown Alliance has installed a series of granite markers along lower Broadway to commemorate every parade that has marched through the Canyon of Heroes. Now pedestrians can literally walk in the footsteps of Lower Manhattan's history. learn more >>
Wayfinding System
Lower Manhattan's narrow, winding streets still follow patterns laid out by 17th-century Dutch colonists. While these streets retain their charm, navigation can be a challenge. The Downtown Alliance is making it easier for everyone to find their way with a user-friendly wayfinding system. learn more >>
Research & Data Collection
The Downtown Alliance has been collecting in-depth data on Lower Manhattan for over 10 years. Our research provides ongoing, comprehensive coverage of the area’s commercial, hotel, retail, residential and tourist markets. In the past couple of years, the Downtown Alliance has significantly expanded its use of technology to better meet the needs of our constituents. Our latest effort uses 2-d bar codes.
