Making the streets of Lower Manhattan more attractive and convenient for pedestrians is a top priority for the  Downtown Alliance. Our ambitious $20 million Streetscape plan has given lower Broadway a new look a makeover that has been recognized by the city's Art Commission for its unique style and elegance. Blocks that were once dingy and dark now feel inviting and contemporary. The plan includes:

  • Reconstruction of all the sidewalks and curbs along lower Broadway

  • Installation of new trash baskets

  • A user-friendly wayfinding and street sign system

  • Handsome new light poles and street furniture

This Broadway Streetscape Program is made possible in part by a grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which is funded through Community Development Block Grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Canyon of Heroes

New York City has played host to the greatest celebrations on earth: its grand ticker-tape parades. The Downtown Alliance has installed a series of granite markers along lower Broadway to commemorate every parade that has marched through the Canyon of Heroes. Now pedestrians can literally walk in the footsteps of Downtown's history.

Street Lighting and Furniture

The Downtown Alliance has transformed the look of lower Broadway by installing tall and graceful street lamps, attractive bike bollards and sleek trash cans.

Stone Street

One of the first paved streets in the "New World," Stone Street has been restored to its former glory. Storefronts that once stood empty and neglected are now home to some of the neighborhood's most successful and bustling dining destinations. Stone Street has maintained its charming historic character while reinventing itself as Lower Manhattan's new "restaurant row."

Wayfinding System

As a result, Lower Manhattan's narrow, winding streets still follow patterns laid out by 17th-century Dutch colonists. While these streets retain their charm, navigation can be a challenge. The Downtown Alliance is making it easier for everyone to find their way with a user-friendly wayfinding system.
