The Downtown's Alliance's sanitation staff works tirelessly to keep Downtown clean, beautiful, and graffiti-free. Every day, we service all 600 trash receptacles in our district, bagging up tons of garbage and relining the baskets with plastic bags that prevent trash overflow.

We manually and machine-sweep the streets and sidewalks to remove litter and dirt. Late at night, we use a high-pressure power washer equipped with environmentally safe cleaning materials to make sure there's no buildup of grime, grease and gum. 

Since our BID's inception, the Mayor's Office of Operations scorecard for street and sidewalk cleanliness has consistently rated our District above 97%.

Graffiti Removal

We're proud that our efforts have made Lower Manhattan 100% graffiti-free. Downtown Alliance crews use high-tech equipment, such as our state-of-the-art power washer, to combat grime. Always on the lookout for graffiti, we welcome alerts from building owners and area merchants. Once alerted, we'll be on the scene promptly to remove graffiti. To report graffiti,

Maintenance

Downtown Alliance sanitation crews regularly remove stickers and illegal advertisements on light poles and other street furniture. We also seasonally repaint the street furniture to keep it looking fresh and clean.

To keep crosswalks clear for pedestrian use, we link sidewalk news boxes together and position them at a safe distance from intersections.
