St. Paul's Chapel is the oldest public building in continuous use in Manhattan. It was built in 1756 and has been in use continuously ever since. Trinity Church had burned during the Revolutionary War and the new church was not finished being constructed, so during the time that the seat of the American government was in New York City, this was George Washington's church. St. Paul's Chapel sits directly across the street from the World Trade Center site. On 9/11, it did not sustain heavy damage and it was the center of a hospitality and volunteer ministry. There were memorials, particularly along the fences. And there were some inside.
